How to Make Moving Day Easier

Moving into your new home is an exciting milestone, but let’s be honest, moving day can also feel overwhelming. Between boxes, logistics, and last-minute surprises, it’s easy to feel the stress pile up. At GAP Homes, we believe that every part of the journey home, including moving day, should be as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Whether you’re moving into your very first apartment or upgrading to a larger space, here are 8 tips to help make your moving day easier, faster, and less stressful.

1. Start Early: Pack with a Plan

Avoid the last-minute scramble by starting to pack at least 2–3 weeks in advance. Begin with non-essential items and seasonal things, and work your way to the everyday essentials. Label boxes clearly by room and contents, future-you will be very grateful.

2. Declutter Before You Box

Moving is the perfect excuse to let go of things you no longer need. Donate, sell, or recycle items you haven’t used in the past year. The less you move, the less you unpack!

3. Create a Moving Day Essentials Box

Keep a separate box or bag with items you’ll need on day one: chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, water bottles, tools, cleaning supplies, and important documents. It’ll save you from digging through boxes when you’re already exhausted.

4. Book Your Movers (or Helpers!) in Advance

If you’re hiring professional movers or renting a van, book early to avoid scheduling issue, especially during busy seasons. If friends or family are helping, send them a plan and timeline in advance so everyone knows what to expect.

5. Use Colour-Coded Labels

Assign a colour to each room (e.g., blue for the kitchen, green for the bedroom) and mark boxes accordingly. It makes unloading quicker and more organised, especially if others are helping.

6. Protect Your New Floors and Walls

Lay down protective sheets or old rugs to keep your new floors clean. Be mindful when moving furniture through tight spaces to avoid scratches or scuffs, a little prevention goes a long way.

7. Notify Utility Companies in Advance

Make sure to set up your electricity, water, internet, and other services in advance, so your new home is ready from the moment you step in.

8. Celebrate the Small Wins

Unpacking doesn’t have to happen in one day. Celebrate milestones like setting up your first room or cooking your first meal. Take breaks, enjoy the process, and remember — this is your fresh start.
